Jackets and trousers are multi-layered to ensure optimum protection. Depending on the manufacturer, the lining is made of Nomex® or Kermel fabric (a blend of Aramid with viscose or wool) which provides superb heat insulation for the wearer. A barrier against moisture is provided by a membrane made from Gore-Tex, Sympatex or a similar fabric.
The outer layer consists once again of Nomex® or Kermel fabric to which special fibres have been added to prevent static charge. In order to ensure that firemen at work are easily visible in dangerous situations, special retroreflecting (silver) and fluorescent (yellow) strips are applied to the garment.
Protective gear is often heavily soiled following an emergency call and needs to be thoroughly, but gently cleaned. In conjunction with reproofing at regular intervals, this method of reprocessing allows the safety and protective functions of garments to be maintained. In cooperation with fire-fighting specialists and fabric and clothing manufacturers, Miele application engineers have developed programmes for professional, economic cleaning, reproofing and drying of protective gear.
System know-how for protective gear
Well-matched washer-extractors and tumble dryers
Special programmes for heat-proof protective clothing in compliance with DIN EN 469
Gentle cleaning and reproofing in a washer-extractor
Drying and activation of reproofing in the tumble dryer
Economic alternative to manual processing; also gentle on materials
Washing with special programme packages
Freely programmable Profi M controls have 16 fixed programmes and 183 customisable slots. Programme parameters can be easily adjusted to provide a solution for all requirements. Free programme slots can be used to store the following optional programmes for fire-brigade applications:
Washing protective apparel
Washing and reproofing protective apparel
Reproofing protective apparel
Chemical-proof coveralls
Chemical-proof coveralls - Special
Masks
Masks with pre-wash
Professional drying and activation of reproofing
Miele tumble dryers not only offer a superb, gentle and reliable drying process, but also the parameters required for "activating" the reproofing substances applied during the wash. The new tumble dryer series is not only equipped with outstanding technology, but also offers an economic drying process: The axial-flow principle ensures that approx. 60% of the discharged air is reutilised in the drying process (Air Recycling).
Electronic Troctronic or Profi M controls enable programmes to be customised to suit individual load compositions and ensure gentle drying to protect fabrics. An appropriate programme should be selected for drying protective clothing. Depending on the composition of clothing, the inner layer (on non-separable garments) is dried to a specified residual moisture level. The garment is then turned inside out again to dry the outer layer. The reproofing substances are 'activated' in the same process.
Reprocessing chemical protection suits
Miele's extensive range of target-group solutions is complemented by a cleaning process for chemical-proof coveralls. Here again, Miele's "multifunctional" washer-extractor with a programme specifically stored for this application.
Following thorough cleaning of inner and outer surfaces and disinfection for 20 mins. at 60°C, the coveralls are placed in a drying unit or hung outside to dry.
